Lawrence Fane's fascination with scientific and artistic notation has taken the form of what he calls the "backwards influence" of Mariano Taccola. M.T./L.F. describes this interchange: Taccola's notebooks leave clues to his engineering and decorative intentions, and, five centuries later, Fane interprets these within the context of his own work. With reverence and delight, Fane illuminates the shared goals and methods of artists and madcap inventors.

This book was published on the occasion of two exhibitions of Lawrence Fane's work at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at the College of William and Mary and the Marsh Art Gallery at the University of Richmond. The exhibition presents works from the previous twelve years that appear to be archaic, machine-like artifacts made from carved wood, steel and cast concrete.
